Kaupungin pinta-ala on 1 836,4 km², josta vesialuetta 266,0 km². Luontoihmiselle Pieksämäki onkin aivan ihanteellinen asuipaikka. Meitä ympäröivältä järvialueelta löytyy hyviä kalavesiä ja vaihtelevia melontareittejä. Muutaman kilometrin päässä kaupungista huokuu jo erämaan rauha.
