PIEKSÄMÄKI – Ideas for Travellers
Eventful and lively Pieksämäki is an interesting travel destination in the midst of idyllic central Savonia. In the heart of the town, on the shore of lake Pieksäjärvi, you will find the Kulttuurikeskus Poleeni cultural centre and the Nukkekoti fairy tale adventure house. The province's oldest parsonage, the Kulttuuripappila Sylvi, a Gustavian era ensemble built during Swedish rule and birthplace of Sylvi Kekkonen, the celebrated wife of our former president, offers a versatile programme ranging from summer theatre to changing art exhibitions.
Specialized museums, such as the Savon Radan railroad museum and the internal missionary work museum at the Sisälähetysseura schools are also within walking distance. A short drive will bring you to the calm surroundings of the Pöyhölän Pappila vicarage prior order restaurant or the strong presence of nature at the Partaharjun Toimintakeskus activity centre, where you might hold a training event with all catering, accommodation and saunas you might need on site. Partaharju also boasts Finland's tallest church, which has just the sky as a roof.
Our region offers a lot to see and experience. The Poleenin Teatteri theatre and other local and visiting troupes present a wide array of entertainment. The Poleeni cultural centre arranges interesting concerts and events. The theatre or concert outing can be combined with a delicious meal in one of the town's restaurants or at Pöyhölän Pappila, where groups with prior arrangement can enjoy the riches of Savonian festive cuisine. And the obvious place for intermission coffee is the Poleeni café.
A rich palette of summer events is also on offer at the Venetmäki village. Meeting events, market days, antique and collectors happenings, theatre and the Venetmäki music festival continue this throughout July.
In your spare time, you might go shopping in the shops of the town centre or at the Moilas Oy café and sales room at Naarajärvi. Buy some china art by Leena Heinonen as a gift for yourself or your friends at her factory outlet near the centre.
Our open nature and sports facilities will guarantee high spirits and good condition to all who enjoy exercise! Wander or paddle along our marked nature routes and enjoy a pure natural environment. Paddling opportunities are on offer throughout the region, for instance at Virtasalmi on the Majavareitti route, at Jäppilä on the Syvänsi lake and Suihkolanjoki river routes or at the long Naarajoki-Kyyvesi-Puulavesi route starting at the Naarajoki river. In winter, most of our wandering routes turn into cross-country skiing routes. And if your dancing feet start itching, they will find help in the ballroom of the Savonsolmu hotel or, in summer, at the Wanhat Weturitallit. Well known performers will star at both locations.
Bird watchers will appreciate the TELEKKÄ bird stand at the Suonteentie road on the shore of lake Tuomiojärvi, one of the richest bird habitats in Southern Savonia. In spring, the birds returning from their migrations present rich viewing from the bird watching tower in the vicinity of the stand.
When you feel like staying a bit longer, the town centre offers accommodation at the hotel Savonsolmu. You may also stay in peaceful natural surroundings at holiday cottages throughout our wide region.
